Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park COVID-19 Update – 3/22/20

Park Closure due to COVID-19 – Effective 3/22/20

In response to the latest guidance from the CDC and actions outlined by Governor Ige, as of Sunday, March 22, 2020, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park will close to all visitors until further notice.  The park will offer no services except those that support visitor or resource protection.

  • All public areas, including trails, roads, campgrounds, the backcountry, and public restrooms are closed to visitors.
  • All commercial tours and special use permits are suspended.
  • The Kahuku Unit is closed.

Like many other businesses, FHVNP is carefully following all appropriate safety procedures outlined by the CDC.   Our first priority continues to be the health of our staff, guides, park employees, partners, and our Hawai’i Island community.

FHVNP has canceled all tours, through April 30, 2020.  During this time, FHVNP will continue to operate with limited hours – by writing grants, working with existing funders, donors, members, and all other business operations necessary to keep our organization viable. We aren’t going anywhere!

We will continue to support the park with several projects that can still be done with the park closed – mainly natural resource activities.
