Join us for a special conversation with painter Dawn Waters Baker, the National Parks Arts Foundation’s October Artist in Residence at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Baker will share how she builds her luminous landscape oils through slow, layered glazes and time in the field—a practice of wonder: walking, observing, journaling, and painting. “Attention IS love,” she says, describing a practice that helps her “listen” to the land.
A Texas-based artist who grew up in the Philippines under the shadow of an active volcano, Baker is known for capturing what she calls the “emotional and spiritual landscape”—trees, light, mist, water, and the mystery that unfolds as a place reveals itself. “I like to think of my work as trying to capture the emotional and spiritual landscape,” she notes. “I am trying to hit at something of the sublime, which is the mixture of nature’s great beauty but also its danger and encompassing presence when you’re in it.”
Baker has completed month-long NPAF residencies at Big Bend National Park (2015), Gettysburg National Military Park (2018), and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (2019–2020), with exhibitions following her park projects. Her work is represented by Waterfall Mansion and Gallery (New York), J. Peeler Howell Gallery (Fort Worth), and Joseph Gierek Fine Art (Tulsa), and is held in private and corporate collections.
