Guardians of the Trails fosters a new generation of stewards to care for our park. The program provides full-time employment program to service corps ages 18-30 to rehab all front country and back country trails in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park over a seven year period – Approximately 150 miles of trails.

The Youth Ranger Internship Program training provides natural and cultural resources interpretation, environmental education knowledge, administration, protection (law enforcement) and park maintenance skills to 75 Hawai’i Island high school students over a 8-week period during the spring semester.
Upon completion of this training, FHVNP assists with payments of stipends for over 25 students to work five days a week for eight weeks in the summer. Work begins with two weeks of intensive hands-on paid training, followed by the interns shadowing park rangers and other staff, and finally by the interns working in the park. We also provide stipends for college students to work for eight weeks with the high school students as peer mentors. The college students are selected from a pool of “former” youth ranger high school students.
Every youth donation goes directly to youth stipends during the year donated.

The hawksbill sea turtle, or honu ‘ea, is a critically endangered species. In the U.S. Pacific, hawksbill turtles nest only on the beaches of the main Hawaiian Islands, primarily along the southern coast of Hawai’i Island. Without human help, the honu ‘ea will likely disappear forever this century. But there is hope. Since 1989, the Hawai’i Island Hawksbill Turtle Recovery Project has been tirelessly working to help honu ‘ea recover. During the annual nesting season from June through December, more than 500 volunteers have located and protected 700 nests and helped 80,000 hatchlings reach the sea.
Your support is crucial to these turtles’ survival:
Your $25 donation supports two nights of field monitoring and protection of nesting turtles.
Your $100 donation provides the equipment and supplies for volunteers to camp at beaches where turtles nest.
Your $200 donation supports a volunteer for 1 month to monitor and protect turtles and their nests.
Your $500 donation buys enough predator-proof enclosures to protect turtle egg nests for the entire 6 month nesting season.

Looking for a rare goose? Look no further than the skies over Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The nēnē, or endangered Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis), is the rarest goose in the world and Hawaii’s state bird. By 1950, nēnē were nearly extinct. A mere 30 birds remained in the wild. In response to the crisis, captive breeding programs were started in Hawai‘i and in England. Since being reintroduced in 1974, the park’s nēnē population has grown from a handful of captive breeding pairs to over 200 wild individuals.
Your support keeps Nēnē flying high:
Your $50 donation buys 2 bags of feed essential for injured birds in rehabilitation and for goslings without access to good nutrition.
Your $200 donation provides a stipend for 2 weeks of volunteer time dedicated to nēnē protection.
Your $500 donation provides a stipend for a volunteer for a Nēnē Recovery Project volunteer for 1 month.
Your $1,500 donation provides a stipend for a volunteer during the critical nesting season.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park works with dog assisted field teams in protecting fragile native forests, endangered species, and culturally significant landscapes. They operate in rugged terrain and challenging conditions and occasionally, they’re injured while on duty.
Right now, when that happens, veterinary costs fall directly on the handler. Emergency treatment for cuts, eye injuries, or other field-related trauma typically ranges from $500 to $1,000 per incident.
We’ve launched a pilot fund to cover verified, work-related veterinary care. Payments go directly to the veterinary provider, and all expenses are tracked and reported at year’s end.
We’ve secured seed funding to start the program on April 1, 2026. Now, we’re looking for supporters who want to help us sustain it long term.
A gift of $500 could cover a single emergency visit.
$1,000 could ensure a dog receives full treatment after a serious field injury.
This is a small, focused investment that directly supports the dogs helping protect Hawaiʻi’s forests every day.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is one of the only places in the world you can experience the rare beauty of the koa-‘ohi‘a forest. Native birds and insects found nowhere else forage in these majestic trees. The park provides a refuge for many native plant and animal species on a comeback from the brink of extinction. Nearly one-third of all the endangered plant species listed in Hawai‘i occur in koa forests. The protection and perpetuation of Hawai‘i’s unique biological heritage depends on removing non-native species and planting natives. Please help us save these precious forests.
Your $25 donation buys the pots, soil, and fertilizer necessary to grow 100 native plant seedlings.
Your $50 donation supports the planting of 5 trees, which in turn provide essential food and shelter for native birds.
Your $100 donation enables the propagation of critically endangered plants such as hau kuahiwi (hibiscadelphus).
Your $200 donation provides a stipend for a volunteer for 1 month to propagate, nurture, and plant native species.
