Guardians of the Trails


The Guardians of the Trails Youth Intern Program is designed to address critical needs within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park while developing youth and young adults through understanding the importance of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Parks natural and cultural resources. 

  • Mission: To protect, preserve, and interpret natural/cultural resources while mentoring the next generation of conservation leaders.

  • Actionable Work: Participants engage in native forest rehabilitation, rare plant seed collection, eruption cleanup, and essential trail maintenance.

  • Program details: A 50-week, full-time paid, six-person service corps available to local youth ages 18-30 and veterans to 35 for focused on hands-on work and professional development in natural resource management.

  • Partnership: The program works closely with the National Park Service, supported by grants and fundraising by FHVNP, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

  • Community Impact: Supports long-term trail restoration and offers a direct pathway to environmental career opportunities for local youth.
