Our flagship program, the Guardians of the Trails service corps, is designed to address critical needs while offering a direct pathway to environmental career opportunities for local youth.
Youth Ranger Internship
We co-sponsor the Youth Ranger program for underserved high school students to work in the park every summer.
Protecting Endangered Species
The Friends fund and facilitate predator management, habitat restoration and ongoing conservation efforts to protect the Park’s endangered species, such as our Hawksbill Sea Turtle and Nēnē.
Park Advocacy
Friends of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park advocate by educating the public, engaging policymakers, and protecting park resources, to help ensure our park remains protected, funded, and accessible for future generations.
Forest Restoration
Forest Restoration Projects help protect precious native forest ecosystems and the rare koa-'öhi'a forests. Projects include native seed collection, invasive species removal, and seedling planting.
Earth, Sea & Sky
The Friends sponsor school bus transportation of 4th graders from all over Hawai‘i to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (Earth), Mokupāpapa Discovery Center (Sea), and ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center (Sky).
Pōhue Kahuku Land Management
The Friends support conservation and maintenance projects in the non-public areas of the Park.
Hale Kīlauea
The Friends funded the construction of Hale Kilauea and continue to maintain and care for it at the park’s summit.
Park Maintenance
The Friends support various maintenance and equipment repair projects throughout the Park.
After Dark in the Park
The Friends co-sponsor this free lecture series held every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. Topics include current and historical eruptions of the volcanoes, but also Hawaiian culture and history, native and endemic flora and fauna, and much more.
Artists in Residence
The Friends co-sponsor the National Park Artist-in-Residence Program to offer artists the opportunity to create work inspired by the natural beauty and cultural heritage of national parks.
‘Ike Hana No‘eau
Free Hawaiian cultural programs to offer participants opportunities to learn about and appreciate Hawaiian culture. They are part of the Park’s ongoing efforts to share authentic Hawaiian culture and provide educational experiences.
Nā Leo Manu (Heavenly Voices)
Free native Hawaiian cultural concert series held several times a year at Kīlauea Visitor Center featuring renowned local musicians, slack-key guitarists, and vocalists.
Annual Cultural Festival
A fun-filled, family-friendly day that celebrates Hawaiian culture with traditional ‘oli (chant) and hula (dance) and traditional craft.
Kahuku Holiday Festival
Every first Saturday of December, featuring photos with Santa, family activities, live music and entertainment, food and craft vendors.
KMC Nightly Walk
Guided walk facilitated by the Friends every Sunday through Thursday from 5pm-6:30pm. Free for Kilauea Military Camp guests.
Walk in the Park
Monthly guided walks in the Park exclusively for FHVNP members. Tours vary in topics, length and hike difficulty.
Voices of the Volcano
The pulse of the park, through the people who know it best. Voices on a Volcano is an intimate video and blog series providing firsthand perspectives on the wonders of our Park.
Guardians of the Forest (K9 Program)
Pilot fund to provide veterinary care for the Park’s dog-assisted field teams that protect fragile native forests, endangered species, and culturally significant landscapes.
