August 9: SUNDAY WALK IN THE PARK - Kīlauea Iki

$5.00

This monthly program on second Sundays is aimed at bringing together the members of the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park to explore the Park’s beautiful trails.

This month’s 3-hour walk explores the iconic Kīlauea Iki crater. We will descend through a lush fern forest onto the floor of a solidified lava lake that was once a bubbling cauldron in 1959. Walk across the cracked crater floor, see active steam vents, and witness the incredible scale of volcanic change.

Location: Kīlauea Iki Overlook Parking Lot

Of interest: Lava lake floor, steam vents, rainforest birds, and volcanic history.

Difficulty: Strenuous – Includes a 400-foot (122m) descent and ascent on steep, rocky switchbacks.

Distance and hiking time: 3.4 miles (6.4 km) roundtrip, Approximately 2.5 – 3.0 hours.

Bring: Plenty of water, sturdy hiking boots, hat, sun protection, and rain gear.

Be Prepared: For hot, dry, wet, and windy conditions on rocky terrain.

This event is presented by the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Program cost is $5.00 for Friends members. Non-members are welcome to join the Friends in order to attend. And, of course, additional donations are always accepted. Park entrance fees apply.

All attendees must be a current Friends Member. If you are not a member, you may sign up here.
