November 8: SUNDAY WALK IN THE PARK - Footprints (Keonehelelei)
This monthly program on second Sundays is aimed at bringing together the members of the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park to explore the Park’s beautiful trails.
This month’s walk explores the Ka‘ū Desert to view the fossilized footprints left in volcanic ash. These prints date back to the late 1700s and tell a story of a sudden, explosive eruption and the people who were traveling through the area at the time.
Location: Footprints Parking Area (Highway 11)
Of interest: Historic footprints in ash, desert flora, and geology.
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate – Trail is flat but consists of loose sand and ash.
Distance: 1.7 miles (2.7 km) round trip.
Be Prepared: This area is often very windy with blowing dust and high sun exposure.
This event is presented by the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Program cost is $5.00 for Friends members. Non-members are welcome to join the Friends in order to attend. And, of course, additional donations are always accepted. Park entrance fees apply.
All attendees must be a current Friends Member. If you are not a member, you may sign up here.
